When buying gold jewelry, you may see terms such as 14K, 18K, or 24K. But what do these numbers actually mean?
What Is a Karat?
A karat (K) measures the purity of gold. Gold purity is measured out of 24 parts.
- 24K = almost pure gold
- 18K = 18 parts gold out of 24, or 75% pure gold
- 14K = 14 parts gold out of 24, or approximately 58.3% pure gold
- 10K = 10 parts gold out of 24, or approximately 41.7% pure gold
Pure 24K gold is very soft, so it is usually alloyed with other metals such as silver, copper, zinc, or palladium to make it stronger and more suitable for jewelry.

Is Higher Karat Always Better?
Not necessarily. Higher karat means higher gold content, but not automatically better for every type of jewelry.
24K gold contains the most gold but is also very soft. Lower-karat gold contains more alloy metals, making it generally harder and more suitable for everyday wear.
18K gold offers a popular balance between high gold content, durability, and luxury, while 14K gold is known for its strength and excellent suitability for daily wear.
What Do Gold Stamps Mean?
Gold jewelry is often marked with a purity stamp. For example:
- 14K / 14KT / 585 = approximately 14K gold
- 18K / 18KT / 750 = 18K gold
- 22K / 916 = 22K gold
The three-digit numbers represent gold purity in parts per thousand. For example, 750 means 750 parts per 1,000, or 75% gold.
Be aware that marks such as GF (Gold Filled) or GE (Gold Electroplate) indicate that the item is not solid gold.
How Can You Check if Gold Is Real?
A purity stamp is a useful first indication, but a stamp alone does not guarantee authenticity, as stamps can be falsified.
For valuable jewelry, professional testing by a reputable jeweler is the safest way to verify gold purity.
Gold Acid Testing
The traditional acid test uses a testing stone and different-strength acids to estimate the karat of gold. A small amount of metal is rubbed onto the stone, and the appropriate acid is applied to the test mark. The reaction helps determine whether the gold is approximately 10K, 14K, 18K, or another karat range.
Acid testing is useful, but it has limitations. It does not give an exact gold percentage, can leave a mark on the jewelry, and may not reliably detect gold plating or certain counterfeit alloys. The acids are also corrosive and require proper handling.

Modern Digital Gold Testing – XRF Analyzers
Today, many professional jewelers, refiners, and precious-metal buyers use XRF (X-ray fluorescence) analyzers. These digital instruments analyze the elemental composition of the jewelry and can provide the gold percentage, approximate karat, and information about other metals in the alloy. Results can be available within seconds and the test is non-destructive.
For example, an XRF analyzer can show that a piece contains approximately 75% gold (18K) and also identify alloying elements such as silver, copper, or palladium. Some professional XRF systems also include technology designed to help detect gold plating.
